Generating Ideas (P1, M1) - Unit 21

Learning Outcome 1 (U21): Be able to generate ideas for an original media product based on a client brief.

Client Brief Requirements:

The client has specified that the magazine should be north London based and popular in north London. It also has to be a piece of original content and something that has to be part of the vibrant music scene.

This client brief includes several client requirements such as;

Implicit requirements:
From a vibrant music scene, present your work using a range of mediums in the planning, production and post-production stages.

Explicit requirements:
Produce a new online and print based magazine, include a front cover and double page spread, plan pitch produce edit and the sample pages, develop a proposal and sample material/ideas for your magazine pages, plan and deliver your pitch, plan the production using planning documentation, produce original content for your magazine, edit the original content together to create meaning.

Open to interpretation requirements:
Some form of music from a vibrant music scene. Produce and edit a product that has meaning

First thoughts:

  • My first ideas and thoughts include having a genre, venue or artist based magazine. They will include relevant information and frequent updates that are important to them.
  • It should also have specific details related to the artist, genre or venue. This will then give some more depth to the magazine and inform people on the genre, venue or artist.

Idea 1:
One of my first thoughts was to make a pop magazine. This is because it is a popular genre and it can always provide information to allow it to be released weekly. It will cost £3 and will be released weekly. it will include the latest songs and gossip around pop. it may include q&a's from people in the industry. plus it will allow customers to find out exclusive information and details about the genre they love. it will most likely have a bright colour scheme to show the vibrancy of the genre. the primary target audience will be 11-15 year old females. this is because they are the most common supporters of the genre and the most likely to spend money on the genre. the secondary target audience will be 16-21 year olds this is because they are likely to spend money on the genre but not as much as they have other priorities for money and therefore should not be the primary target audience but the second as they may still purchase a magazine or such about the genre and the industry.

Idea 2:
My another of my original thoughts was to make a Rap magazine. This is because it is an upcoming genre in north London and there are not many magazines on this genre. Therefore I thought to breach this gap in the market and create a rap magazine with a very unique selling point. The magazine will come out weekly at £2.50. I chose this price point because the target audience for the magazine is working to middle class black rap supporters aged 15-19 that may not want to spend an awful lot of money on a magazine every week so it will be a little cheaper than other magazines due to the market it is aimed at. The secondary target audience however will be middle class white males aged 16-21 as they will have interest in the product and therefore will spend some of their money on a magazine weekly that interests them as a rap supporter. The colour scheme for the magazine will be dark with a bit of red but mostly black to fit with the street theme of the genre. Within the magazine there will be Q&A's alongside new songs and albums plus there will be lyrics breakdown pages from genius and also exclusive information on concerts. Plus exclusive looks at a rappers favourite kicks.

Idea 3:
The other idea I have is to make a rap artist magazine. This will be a magazine about a specific artist in the rap genre. It will be released weekly and it will be priced at £3.99. I would set this price point because the magazine may not be a weekly purchase for some customers because they may not have interest in the artist the magazine is based around so they will not buy that weeks release. The primary target audience for this magazine will be 16-21 middle class white males. This is the primary target audience because they will have more interest in the artist and they are more likely to spend their money on information about their favoured artist. The secondary target audience will be 16-19 working - middle class black males. This is because they will be more interested in the music over the artist so they are less likely to spend their money on a magazine about a singular artist especially if they don't like the artist in the magazine. The colour scheme for this magazine will be dark with black for the majority of the cover and maybe some red, white or gold for text or borders. The magazine will contain information on the artists latest song or album, plus details on any concerts or performances they have or if they are going on tour giving details on that. The magazine will mainly talk about latest songs and have a genius lyrics breakdown within them.

Conclusion;
To conclude I will be following through with my second idea. This is because I believe it has more potential to be successful and it has more opportunities to grow in more than the others. It will be based in north London due to it being a client requirement and the Rap genre is popular in this area so that brings some increase to its potential success. My second idea also has a very unique selling point as there are no other Rap based magazines available in the area and it will not have any competition the prevent its sales. However included in the Rap genre is grime and drill, both of which are short lived genres so that may take away the longevity of the magazines contents potential but there may be a replacement genre that come to light or grime and drill could last longer than most believe.
